This past Monday I made it to my first Dr. Sketchy's session. Dr. Sketchy's is a life drawing class held at the Windup Space in Bmore. The models are typically burlesque dancers or unique performers. 8 bucks to enter and pull out your charcoals to sketch for 3 hours. Tasty beverages are available at the bar and sometimes you're even treated to a mid-break performance. An all around win/win (minus it being held on Monday nights and in the hood). Here are my first attempts of getting back into the swing of things. Crazy how foreign all of my drawing materials felt... I need to change that!

NOLA Highlights

This past weekend I visited my bestie Lil Miss Honsauce (and fam) in NOLA. This was my first NOLA experience and I'm already planning my return trip. The architecture was sick... Massive, plantation-style, white-columned houses, passed down from generation to generation. Kinda like the homes in Roland Park, yet grander and with more charm. Lots of rich food (french bread, butter, fried seafood and grits!). They like to put poached eggs on everything, which I’m a huge fan of. Sunday morning jazz brunch... Umm... yes! Oh, and the vegetation is pretty great too... Ancient oaks line the streets, overhanging roads and ripping up sidewalks AND they’re mixed in with palm trees! Woah!The daiquiri stands everywhere don’t hurt either.The air just seemed lighter.You should visit!

Well this is a major chunk of it... My studio supplies, my lamps and linens, my liquor! All heaped together with no place to live... no home. I seriously feel homeless. I know that I am not, nor will I ever be but I'm not in a place where I can cuddle up with all my THINGS. Kinda sucks cuz I like my things. I have cool things that don't belong in trash bags or boxes. Last weekend, while looking for a bday gift for Lil Miss Honsauce, I happened upon a paper maché skeleton about 20" tall with moveable limbs AND glitter for eyes! It was super cool and just my style and I was about to purchase it, when I realized that I had no where to put it. This made me quite sad. I know that my living situation is only temporary and that I should take advantage of my ability to be mobile, but for someone (me) who likes to have her things around her... it's not ideal.

The "home" front

Crazy hiatus for good reasons... Tension on the “home” front.The boyfriend-formerly-known-as Sweet Lips decided to turn sour, like those atomic warhead candies you can’t stand in your mouth for one second – kinda sour. Within a matter of 2 days I’m uprooted from former “home” to new temporary “home”.

Speaking of plant metaphors... I feel like a hardy (hearty) plant that has been left outside to endure winter, but it just went from a deceiving 55 to a bitter –2 and that kind of dramaticshift is not natural. Even the hardiest of plants buckle under this amount of strain and stress, right?

I haven’t caved in or broken quite yet, nor do I intend to.See I’ve felt this icy blast before and my core is well-equipped to handle such drastic shifts in climate and when I’m feeling a bit weak, I can count on a team of reinforcements to shelter me from the chill.

That’s where I’m at right now.I’m sure in no time (I hope) to return to my sarcastic, chatty, hungry-for-life self, but for now I’m taking cover.

I spent New Year's Eve at Cinghale with Sweet Lips and friends. We made a late reservation so that we could just walk outside at midnight to view the Bmore Harbor fireworks. Twas nice, minus my main course. I thought I'd be adventurous and try the squab (aka a young domestic pigeon). Bad decision... I couldn't get over the sheer scariness of it's bony winged structure. That – in combination with it being cooked rare was enough to make me shove it aside.

I shared pictures with my co-workers and received a link to an alien character that the squab reminded them of (necromorph from deadspace 2?).

A Hearty Happy Hour

On a recent trip to Buffalo to visit Sweet Lips' rents, we had cocktails at an unassuming establishment called Vera Pizzeria. I honestly did not have high hopes for food or drink while in Buffalo, but this place changed my attitude. Besides ordering a Hot Buttered Rum to warm me up, I ordered
Neptune's Trident, which consisted of:

Dark Spiced Rum
Elderflower Liqueur
House Made Grenadine
Coconut Water
Orange Spice Bitters

It's description (Spicy and bold with a surprisingly delicate balance) was accurate. I was really surprised by the addition of Coconut Water, which has been popping up all over the place as a way of rehydrating, but never have I seen it inserted into a drink that didn't have a tropical umbrella. It was a nice way to mellow out the spice and add some richness. May need to perform experiments of my own... I'll keep you updated on my scientific findings.

I recently visited the bachelorette pad of one of my girlfriends and it made me miss when I had one of my own. Not that I don't enjoy where I'm at now, but there is no replacing the feeling of coming home to a domain that is entirely yours. Every fork, every towel, every piece of art, every book... is all yours and displayed in a way that is 100% YOU! No need for compromise. You can shabby chic it up, add hot pink accents and glitter, if that’s your thing. Sometimes it wouldn’t necessarily be “my thing”, but I’d add pink to my pad just cuz I could. Sharing can be overrated sometimes. Plus, hello! Look at her view! I’d def love to wake up and fall to sleep to that sight.

Ha, one thing I don't miss too much... Total responsibility for feeding myself!Her fridge is quite a bare site.

Besides the snow globe, cupcake maker, box with password, book about Santa, photo album and flowers, it's just like mine... or not. I don't know... I guess my first thoughts were, "Awwhhh... to be young and so easily amused AND so easy to make happy." Not that I'm not happy, but it just takes alot more than a snow globe these days.

Melancholia Cleavage

Last night, I checked out Melancholia at the Charles Theater. It was a hauntingly beautiful depiction of the end of the world through the point of view of two anxious and depressed sisters. The scenes were stunning and I was trying to find deeper meaning in the plot and dialogue, but I couldn't get passed how amazing Kirsten Dunst's boobs were and how nice it would be to have a pair of those. Her body in general is sick, too bad she looks like a snaggle-toothed pubescent boy from the neck up.

I took some holiday decorating notes last weekend at the West Elm store. They had a variety of styles represented... crafty, glitzy, lumberjacky (don't quote me on that). I just know that I prefer the style of the first couple photos that combine rustic elements with ones that are more polished. A more casual, informal, "take your shoes off" kinda feel.

My co-worker and I started adding items to our imaginary wedding registry. It started with a discussion about us already being "established women". Meaning... We already have a lot of basic housewares and life's necessities. We've been out of the ramen-for-dinner phase for a long time now and "established women" make responsible purchases (most of the time).

First on my list was a Dyson vacuum (swivel ball, bells and whistles included). First on hers was a KitchenAid stand mixer. Not sure she knew about this one before requesting it, but now I might have to change my number one.
