Yes, yes, I know...
The Love Competition
Let's evolve together.
The Love Competition from Brent Hoff on Vimeo.
Can one person experience love more deeply than another? That’s what The Stanford Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging
and filmmaker Brent Hoff set out to understand when they hosted the 1st
Annual Love Competition. Seven contestants, ranging from 10 to 75 years
of age, took part. And they each spent five minutes in an fMRI machine,
thinking deeply about love and allowing the imaging technology to
measure activity in their dopamine, serotonin and ocytocin/vasopressin
pathways. If you think this sounds unromantic, you’ll want to reserve
judgment. Though science may be the explicit focus here, the film has a
touching human dimension to it. via
I want to pick a guy who allows me to be who I am.
A game of would I rather...
At the thought of re-immersing myself in the dating scene:
– I would rather step my bare feet on thumbtacks every morning
– I would rather have weekly gynecological checkups
– I would rather have monthly root canals
– I would rather watch the PGA Tour, followed by the US Open, followed by the Masters
– I would rather grow nose hair
– I would rather be limited to Comic Sans
– I would rather be forced to wear flats everyday
– I would rather have a ménage a trois with John Mayer and Jack Johnson
– I would rather eat squab
– I would rather everyday was Valentine's Day
– I would rather spend Friday nights tweezing
– I would rather be denied caffeine
– I would rather pick up neighborhood dog shit
– I would rather go to "dry" baby showers every weekend
– I would rather...

Worst Dates in Six Words
Shmitten Kitten asked her readers to submit their worst dates summed up in six words (great idea!).
Here are a couple of her favorites:
Here are a couple of her favorites:

- Flashed gun. Then pitched me Amway.
- Tried to eat Buffalo wings seductively.
- Puked on my carpet. Denied it.
- Insisted on tarot card reading first.
- Used N'Sync to "pump himself up"
- Covered ex-wife's name tattoo with unicorn.
- Showed up in inside out sweatpants.
- Flaming pink button-up, buttoned down.

- Teeth like bad British sitcom actor.
- Was blinded by his bedazzled shirt.
Emoticon Maddness
This is how Shmitten Kitten feels about emoticon texting and I gotta tell ya... I feel the same way. First off, I must admit that I have an issue over emoticoning my messages. It's bad. So bad, that I have to re-read my messages and edit them for excessive emoticons. This problem stems from not being able to communicate tone properly or often being misinterpreted (You might call me Lil Miss Interpreted), but what is the point of life if you can't use sarcasm??? You could say I use emoticons, like a teenage girl uses lol (Eeew). Here comes the double standard: These crimes committed by females are forgivable, but quite the contrary for dudes. I do think it's acceptable for them to incorporate an emoticon in the body of a text (limit 1 per text or message), but what is absolutely unacceptable is to just send an emoticon as the whole message ;) or :) Oooh... this boils my blood! It's the kind of half-ass lameness that I am happy to totally ignore.
Breakups: The Mega Mix
I started jotting down some of these a while ago when some friends of mine were going thru breakups. I was trying to think of constructive, pick-me-up advice. In the past, I've found solace at the bar, but this can only last for so long till your back in the fetal position. The best advice I can think of is music. Find new music! New inspiring artists, especially since the same old songs can drive you nuts.
These are a couple of my go-to songs for the many stages of breakup coping... to draw me inward, to get vexed and to get over it:
1) Black – Pearl Jam
2) Waltz #2 – Elliott Smith
3) Gravity – Sara Bareilles
4) Break Up to Make Up – The Stylistics
5) My World is Empty Without You – The Supremes
6) Back to Black – Amy Winehouse
7) Kharma Police – Radiohead
8) Look What You've Done – Jet
9) One – Mary & Bono
10) 99 Problems – Jay Z
11) Supernova – Eminem
12) Ese Hombre – India
13) Ex Girl to the Next Girl – Gang starr
14) On to the Next One – Jay-Z
15) Poison – BBD
16) Mona Lisa – Slick Rick
17) Another one Bites the Dust – Queen
18) Satisfaction – Rolling Stones
19) Smile – Lily Allen
20) The Dog Days are Over – Florence

Breakups: the soft and the silly
I called into 106.5 yesterday to try and win tickets to see a sold-out Sara Bareilles show. I rarely do this sort of thing, my main motivation was to hear Gravity live. It's pretty damn lovely. I think we can all relate to this song. At some point or another there's always that certain someone who continues to tug at our rib cage, someone seemingly impossible to forget.

Sweet Pants meet Sweet Lips
When I was in the midst of the dating scene, I would regularly check Maura Kelly's site at Marie Claire for some insightful commentary on her dating experiences and dating "research". Nowadays... yeah, I don't check it so much. I guess, I care less about dissecting the madness of it all, since currently I'm quite content in that department. I still overthink relationships to death and eventually I intend on writing about my current one (just not yet). Today I randomly headed to Maura's site and came across this post: Top 5 Coolest New Dating Sites to Try. Apparently OkCupid.com (which I would rank the best in all my expert experience) was recently bought out by Match.com (sucky). Maura also shares my fondness for OkCupid because of the higher caliber of dude and its cool factor AND also because she met her current honey on the site. His name (alias)............................. Sweet Pants! Crazy, no? Cuz of my Sweet Lips? Not sure... I think there is a possible sign here.
A simple thanks would suffice.
Although... I know I probably owe a couple "thank you" cards myself (not saying it would even out or anything), but there are a handful of "men" out there that have shown me a thing or two. Hidden gems in the city, savory recipes that impress, lil known musicians that make you feel all tingly inside–damn skippy I'm "stealing" those AND since it's not polite to speak of your ex when you're with someone new... They are just going to think that I'm a plethora of good ideas :) This is the benefit to exploring your options!
Kanye's Blame Game (the explicit version-is there any other?) explores this notion. At the end of the song you hear a dialogue Chris Rock has with his new chic. Apparently, she's picked up some new tricks and he is quite impressed. It's completely vulgar and hilarious and an ongoing text joke between Woody and I. Instead of being bitter or jealous of his chic's ex, he is appreciative and even offers to thank him... "You know what, I got to thank Yeezy. And when I see that nigga I'ma thank him. I'ma buy the album, I'ma download that motherf*cker. I'ma shoot a bootlegger, that's how good I feel about this nigga." Kanye's new cd (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) BTW is full of non-stop bangers! The gifts that keep on giving
The best gifts are the ones received just cuz. Received on a day that's not Christmas or your birthday. Received unexpectedly from someone who noticed something that would make your life just a lil bit easier, safer or more fun.
Don't get me wrong, receiving bling as a gift is Grrreeat (like Tony would say), but almost as good is when a dude buys a gift because he's really paying attention to what you say or how your living your life. Example: I once got a humidifier from a boyfriend who noticed how congested I would wake up each morning... Not so sexy but sweet. Another Example: Another boyfriend, after noticing that I had no way to view guests or people knocking at my door (no good-in the hood) bought me a peep hole. He came over with his drill and automatically got to work ;) In other words-he didn't even ask my permission, just drilled a hole in my door and installed a peep hole. Now that was VERY sexy! Another Example: The dude that bought me a new set of wine glasses after seeing I had broken all but one. Another Example: The dude that bought me a set of Shamwow towels after seeing how water splashes all over my counter when washing dishes. Ironically, I use them now for anything but that purpose... Another Example: My recent honey who bought me a remote for my Mac, since I use it regularly as a stereo and TV.
Sure these gifts are predominantly practical, but they are a sign that you are staying on their mind (in a good way). I think often we assume that what we say to our dudes goes in one ear and out the other, which in general-is the case. That's why it's extra special when they randomly go out of their way to give us a gift that we may not have even thought of for ourselves. These are the gifts that I remember.

Online Dating vs. The Job Hunt
I've re-written the same paragraph about 50 times in the last 3 month. Just a couple lines that keep driving me nuts... the meat of my cover letter–where I'm supposed to pull you in and shine. At times, depending on the position I'm applying for, I either sound over or under qualified. So I try to "dumb it down" a bit or highlight other talents that would be seen as a bonus. The whole process of submitting resumes, interviewing and marketing my assets is very similar to online dating. I would go as far as saying all my online dating experience has helped prepare me for this process.
A couple similarities between online dating and applying for jobs:
A couple similarities between online dating and applying for jobs:
- Online profiles are just more casual/witty resumes (or cover letters). Sure when applying for jobs you should be fairly direct, but since I'm in the design field it's appropriate and expected to insert some of my "character" into my marketing materials. Writing my fair amount of profiles has helped me analyze and highlight my strong assests.
- In both instances, I create lil online glimpses of me (my stellar work, my exceptional experience, my fun friends, my cultured and inquisitive self, blah/blah, etc.).
- I look for keywords in both opportunities that would lead me to believe that they are not worth my time (Printing companies that state they "are willing to train" = they want you to do manual labor or they are trying to be cheap and combine 2 positions in 1 (sales/design) ummmm, no. Dudes that state, "I'm a student of the world" = broke bums that live in mom's basement).
- There is a fair amount of deception and let-down involved in the interview process and the 1st meet-up. What comes to mind the most... he's most-likely shorter, heavier, balder or has worse teeth than I expected. In interviews I often find out that they are paying yellow cheddar cheese kinda cash or their work is crap and I'm embarrassed for them when I have to bring out my portfolio. All this leads to a very irritated me. I'm irritated in both cases that I had to waste prep time, drive time and my witty "pitch" for NOTHING.
- The Pitch. I hate to call it this in dating, but I think it's accurate. I've been on so many interviews and so many 1st and never dates, the things that come out of my mouth are so damn automatic. Sometimes I actually scare myself with the shizz I say... because after so many 1st time meetings I become more bold (is it more bold or bolder?). Hey, what do I have to lose? I would go as far as saying that I entertain people on both ends of the spectrum that I have no intention of every speaking to again, just to perfect my pitch.
- The Follow-up. Not receiving one, even when you could care less about the job or date can make you second guess your greatness. Like... Damn, I thought I was pretty charismatic... I thought they were wow'd with my work. Were they not impressed? Maybe they were intimidated. Maybe they knew they couldn't provide me the challenge I needed. Yeah, that's it... because clearly, I am freakin' rad... duhhh.
!!!NEWS FLASH!!!
Dudes over-analyze messages just like we do!!!
So when I used to work with Mouth and May, we would kill time by analyzing my current relationship dramas to death, particularly text and email messages since it seemed like most of them liked to irritate me between the hours of 9-5. There was alot of, "So what should I say next?"('s) and sometimes the response would be, "Ok, that works," but would take 10 minutes of deliberation to send. Yes, silly I know, but when dealing with the "player" types every move has to be deliberate. Most times we would crack ourselves up... knowing that they were not on the other end of this putting so much thought into a response. Or were they???Well, I'm currently contracting at another agency and have developed a somewhat similar relationship with one of my office mates... although he is a dude (let's call him Woody). Our office conversations have circled around my current dating situations, his fiancé (wedding plans), hip hop (which is why I'm finding myself cursing more lately), wildly inappropriate Jew and Hispanic comments, food and trashy reality TV. I think he enjoys vicariously living through my missteps, even encouraging staying in the single life. Recently, he's developed some of his own relationship drama with the misses, so the tables have turned a bit and I've been giving him advice.
Yesterday, he needed some texting advice and I was all over it! I totally loved playing the part of the adviser rather than the advisee. I mean we got down to the "Hey" or the "Hi" of the matter. He was planning to take her out. I said whatever you say to her, don't say "Date Night". Date Night is for slackers that don't usually treat their lady to nice dinners or nights out. So dudes use the words Date Night and we are supposed to get all giddy with anticipation? Bullshit. Anyways, I digress... He was trying to select the appropriate words and I adviced him to be as direct (and short-maybe a lil mysterious) as possible. Not, "Are you available?" but, "Be ready and look pretty." She kept pushing him for the what and the where of the situation... like, "Well, what should I wear? Dress? Jeans? Heels?" This I understand... a girl has to plan her outfit, but I asked him, "What do you like to see her in?" He said dress, so I said tell her you're leaning towards dress. This went back and forth several times. Woody was all like, "This is fun, I feel like I'm dating again (even making the reeling in fish motion)," and I say, "Now you know what my life is like... full of carefully selected words."
NOW, I really want to be a relationship advice columnist (says the single girl)! So much easier to dish it than to take it and fun to see others squirm over silly messages.
Judging a profile by it's color.
Really diggin' okcupids' blog or "trends" page. They report on online dating trends by judging user profiles and pictures. Some noteworthy subjects The Big Lies People Tell In Online Dating, Your looks and Your Inbox, The 4 Big Myths of Profile Pictures. The delivery is very conversational, unpolitically-correct and usually backed with great lil charts (who doesn't like charts?). Recently they posted on "The REAL 'Stuff White People Like". The article looks at key/recurring words from different races on okcupid. Pretty interesting to compare and contrast what different races want to convey about themselves. Here are some of the results:
More races and sarcastic commentary here.

Like Woah OR Holy Shitballs... Can't decide.
I started online dating again. Call it a momentary life lull. A friend of mine posted a link to his profile on Ok Cupid asking for advice. After checking out his profile, I found myself almost subconsciously filling out my own. I genuinely signed up with zero expectation. I thought the site was well-designed and I had some time to kill. In general, I try to keep an open-mind to online dating, but from experience I know it can be fruitless and exhausting.
At a time when dudes should be the least of my focus–I meet 2 genuine, attractive, thoughtful guys (whom I endearingly nickname Sweet Lips and Mr. February). So I do what comes as natural as applying mascara at a red light... I casually date them both. I make no promises and I encourage them to date other people (mostly out of my own guilt). I can feel almost immediately that this will not be enough for either of them. My luck that I meet probably the last 2 men in the (410) that are not afraid of the "C" word. This is good luck, right? I'm 2 times as lucky, but now I am torn between deciding between 2 great guys. Lucky me. These guys have different interests, musical taste, hobbies, etc. It's like comparing brie to manchego and I'm a chic that likes cheese and variety. Not sure if that analogy worked, but maybe you get the picture.
Well lucky 'ole Me. This weekend was Virgin Fest and when Lil Miss Taco Tuesday had a change of plans I invited Sweet Lips to join me. He had prior plans to attend an annual family crab feast. We decided to stop by there for a bit and then drive down to the concert in time to catch the major acts. I was meeting some of his family (mainly his cousins) for the 1st time, no biggie. I'm outside on a gorgeous day at his cousin's house digging into crabs. 3 and I'm over it. I leave Sweet Lips outside and go into the kitchen to wash my hands. I'm munching on some green beans as Mr. February walks into the room. I would give up cheese and chocolate for a week to see the reaction on my face at that moment. I do remember how I felt... Total and utter disbelief! Like woah OR holy shitballs! Krusty the Clown could've walked in the room and I would've felt less shock. These 2 dudes that I would've never put in similar social circles are about to stand in the same room... AND, I am so busted or am I? I did have a total initial panic. Mainly, I wanted to avoid embarrassment for everyone involved. Ok, mainly for myself. Panic turned into awkward/inward laughter, especially after introducing one to another and then kinda back to scared stiff as I watched the minutes tick down on the industrial-size clock.
I left (escaped) without an ugly confrontation and opted to admit the sticky situation to Sweet Lips after the concert. Turns out that Mr. February plays in the same string quartet as Sweet Lips's cousin's wife. Follow that? Doesn't matter. It's a ridiculous coincidence and although I was upfront about my casualness with both of them... I still feel like a creep. A creep that needs to figure out what she really wants as not to upgrade to jerk status. Not sure how I actually feel about the "C" word anymore? I was just becoming a pro at the one more readily used in relationships these days... Casual.
Recovering Bad Boy Lover
Eventually, I got to asking him if he was dating anyone. EVEN THOUGH... I totally knew the answer. He was never in my immediate social scene (not that I really have one and I totally do not recommend dating in your "circle"), but Smalltimore always lives up to it's name. Word of his new chic got back to me soon enough. Chances have it that Lil Miss Taco Tuesday works with his new chic's mother. She put 2 and 2 together and I received a phone call one random workday afternoon–demanding me to sign on to her facebook account and then click on chic's page, where I immediately found pics of their young love. I honestly did'nt feel much. Although there is always the automatic comparison that you do with new chic and you. Ego still intact, I was happy for him. She obviously could hear birds chirping when she was with him. It was cute. I hear now he has whole facebook albums dedicated to him (a ridiculous amount of poses with a boogie board). Well... good for him. He needed a chic like that. And maybe this dude needed a chic that was going to dedicate Flickr albums to him. Who knows... I know it ain't me.
I can't revolve my world around Dude. I will never dedicate albums to you.
Point really being... I felt all kinds of grown-up for having a grown-up conversation with an ex. Sad I know, but reality. You want to hear sad... I almost told someone the other day to "not be so nice... because I am a recovering bad boy lover" :/
On the topic of nerds I'd like to de-pant.
Last week I caught the last film of the summer projected on the pier at Fells Point. It was one of the only nights in months with zero humidity, so bonus add to the picturesque setting. The film was: 500 Days of Summer, which I had already seen but was eager to watch again. One scene in particular stood in my mind the second go round... Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character is in full-blown twinkle-toes effect. Euphoria has taken over and he seems pretty much unstoppable, especially in the work arena. There is a scene where co-workers are coming to him for help with "hooks" for greeting cards and the creative juices are flowin'. He's spewing out clever/catchy/witty lines one after another, regardless of the subject matter. So I got to wondering...
Does being in love lead to greater creative productivity?
(Doesn't this look like a Gap ad? btw)
I've been trying to think back on past love-like experiences, but I really can't remember if I felt more inspiration to "create" during those times. In all honesty, the last time I think I heard birds chirping it was only for like 4 months and that was prob more than 3 years ago. I do assume that it would at least free up some more time for creative pursuits. Single people (at least this one) feel the need to fill their schedule. Or else they might be deemed worthless individuals, but that's another topic. There's always that flip-side though... the part of the movie where things fade to gray, sometimes black. The part where his boss suggests that he might be better suited writing bereavement cards. Not much productivity there. He does eventually use this opportunity as inspiration to pursue his actual dreams to become an architect. Which I believe, if he was pursuing from the get then the chic probably wouldn't have left him. Point being: We are at our most-sexiest when we are actually pursuing our dreams, not just talking about them. This is what I'm working on right now... being at my most-sexiest.
The interns are boning.
...I'm sure they would never use that term because they are beyond syrupy sweet. I've already scheduled my dentist appointment because every time they open their mouth my teeth ache. "Adorable" (hate that word) lil couple that sit caddy corner from each other. From what I gather they have a thrilling weekly schedule that involves Noodles & Company on Wednesday and the local (chain) bar that they can walk to on Friday. You can tell that the dude is totally enamoured by her. Jumping at every opportunity to get her attention. Taunting her... inventing lil games to entertain her. I have resisted the urge to burst into laughter on several occasions. Today they played cat and mouse over a yogurt that he stole from her and teased her by scraping the end of the cup. It's obnoxious, but I find myself turning my headset down just to torture myself with their shenanigans.
Mostly, I wonder if they're for real? Are they always that sweet to each other? Also, I wonder if I'm just turning into a nasty bitter witch. Frowning down on young love :/ I've become so immune to the bullshit, always expecting to find some skeleton. Working on the assumption that anything that seems too good to be true is. Sad... I'm sure it's totally plausible that they have a groovy kind of love. I think I might be a bit jealous... Eewh! Not of Noodles & Company, but... I guess of that sort of unabashed declaration of love. The kind that does not involve a text message or a facebook post. Not positive but I think he may be willing to kill a small horse for her.

The Ideal Roster
Hard Drive Fried
Work • Photos • Music LOST :(
Which makes me wish I had a–MAC Genius on the Roster. No waiting in line, making appointments like the other clueless tech fools, I just call my Genius to the rescue–sit back, sip a wine spritzer while he assesses the situation. This dude also knows how to hijack software, saving me lots of cash.
Some other possible additions:
–Car Savvy Dude... He doesn't necessarily need to be a mechanic because they usually have gross hands, just the ability to easily diagnose car issues and somehow always know when my car needs it's oil changed AND goes the extra mile to take it himself to save me the agony of 1/2 hour in a stinky waiting room.
–Wealthy Distinguished Dude... So content with my hugs and kisses (also too lazy to do anything else), he loves to buy me flirty dresses and take me salsa dancing–smoking cigars by the bar while I dance the night away with hot, young Latin men.
–The Outdoorsman... Always on some hike or going down some river. Me? I'm not so adventurous, but when I want to feel Mother Nature's hand–he's the dude I call. He also doesn't talk much, so I use this opportunity to reflect in natural surroundings.
–The Airline Hookup Dude... Pretty self-explanitory. Can also go hand-in-hand with Vacationship Dude (see here).
–The Tall Dude that is good with his hands... For those moments when I can't reach, though I'm quite handy myself–sometimes it just gets old doing everything for yourself. Plus, dudes that can build shit are sexy. This dude is usually a contractor.
–The Deep/Artsy Dude... When I'm in the mood for thought-provoking conversation or need someone to accompany me to The Windup Space on Monday nights to sketch burlesque dancers.
–The Musician... This dude introduces me to obscure artists and is always down to see a live show. He has a lil more testosterone than Deep/Artsy Dude.
–Motorcycle Dude... This is a recent development. I currently feel the need to get my butt on a bike (never ridden one). This dude has a Harley or a classic bike, no tatt's or smelly armpits–he just digs iconic Americana.
–Chef Dude... He doesn't necessarily have to be a chef by profession, but he loves getting creative in the kitchen–he especially loves watching my face fill with delight after I take a bite of his thoughtfully prepared dish. This dude is also a lover of wine.
–Shopping Buddy Dude... He is a metrosexual and usually a lil too manicured for my rough-around-the-edges taste, but he has a great sense of style and I trust his judgement. This makes him a great companion in the fitting room.
I'm sure I could come up with a couple others, but this a pretty healthy list.
